City Yaroslavl is the administrative center of the Yaroslavl Region. It is situated in the central part of the East European Plain on both banks of the river Volga, at the place of influx of Kotorosl into Volga, 282 kilometres to the north-east of Moscow. The distance from Yaroslavl to Saint-Petersburg is 850 kilometers.
The city is situated in the moderate continental climate zone. The average temperature in January is –11°C, in July +18°C. Average annual precipitation is 520-590 mm. Yaroslavl is situated at the intersection of automobile and railway roads, water and airways, long-distance oil and gas pipelines. The area of the city is 21.4 thousand hectares, the city is administratively divided into 6 districts.
Yaroslavl is an ancient Russian fortress city on the Volga river. As the city was strategically and geographically in a favorable position, it became the strongpoint of princely power and outpost for the spread of Christianity in the Russian North East.
Yaroslavl was not only a developed commercial and crafts center, but also a center of culture. The development of book-learning, spread of education and a high literacy rate in different layers of society, the development of local chronicle writing, formation of architectural and art traditions determined the economic and cultural blossom of the city on the Volga.
In the modern and contemporary period of history the role of the city as a large industrial and cultural center of Russia has risen. The 20th century gave new momentum to the development of industrial production in Yaroslavl.
Yaroslavl has always been admired by travelers. In the second half of the 20th century, after it has been included in the famous Russian tourist route – The Golden Ring of Russia, Yaroslavl has received a powerful impetus in development of domestic and inbound tourism. The city became the largest center of cultural tourism.
Exchanges and cooperation between Jiujiang and Yaroslavl
In November 2014, Jiujiang and Yaroslavl began to interacted with each other.
In December 2016, Xiong Yongqiang, then Vice Secretary of the Jiujiang Municipal Party Committee, led a delegation to visit Yaroslavl City. Both sides had in-depth discussions on exchanges and cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture, and other field, which enhanced mutual trust.
In May 2018, the Youth Art Delegation from Yaroslavl City visited Jiujiang and jointly held the "China and Russia Youth Art Exchange Exhibition".
In June 2020, Jiujiang and Yaroslavl City signed on-line the Supplement Agreement to the Protocol of Intention between the city of Yaroslavl(Russia) and the City of Jiujiang(China) for the period 2021-2022.
In September 2020, then Mayor of Jiujiang City, Xie Laifa, expressed congratulations to Yaroslavl City on the 1010-year anniversary of its foundation.
In December 2021, Jiujiang held the International Sister City Painting Exhibition, 26 paintings from Yaroslavl City were exhibited.
In November 2022, Tongwen Middle School established contact with the Yaroslavl No. 43 Middle School and conducted educational exchanges.
In December 2022, Jiujiang and Yaroslavl City signed the Joint Statement Concerning Results of the Protocol of Intention between the city of Yaroslavl(Russia) and the City of Jiujiang(China) for the period 2019-2022.
In December 2022, the leaders of Jiujiang sent a letter congratulating Molchanov on his election as the Mayor of Yaroslavl City.
In May 2023, Bao Chenggeng, the Vice Mayor of Jiujiang, led a delegation to visit Yaroslavl City. Jiujiang and Yaroslavl City signed the Activity Plan for Development of Cooperation between Yaroslavl City Hall (Russian Federation) and Jiujiang Municipal People’s Government (People’s Republic of China) for 2023-2028.
In July 2023, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially approved the establishment of an international friendly city relationship between Jiujiang and Yaroslavl City.
In July 2023, the Mayor of Yaroslavl City sent a letter to Jiujiang congratulating Jiang Wending on his election as the Mayor of Jiujiang.
In July 2023, Jiujiang established Sister Cities Relationship with Yaroslavl City.
In October 2023, Yaroslavl City and Jiujiang signed the Agreement on Establishing Friendship-City Relations between Jiujiang Municipal People’s Government(The People’s Republic of China) and Yaroslavl City(Russian Federation). And the Mayor of Yaroslavl City led a delegation to visit Jiujiang to carry out friendly exchanges in economic, trade, education, culture and other fields.
In October 2024, at the invitation of Mayor of Yaroslavl, Jiang Wending, Mayor of Jiujiang led a delegation to visit Yaroslavl. The two sides exchanged views in such fields as education, tourism, trade, culture. Gavrilov, Deputy Mayor of Yaroslavl was invited to attend the opening ceremony of 2024 Jiujiang ( Gongqingcheng )and Yaroslavl Down Clothing Fair. At the fair, Gongqingcheng Textile and Apparel Association signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement with Yaroslavl Branch of China-Russia Friendship Association, which have opened a new chapter of friendly relations between the two cities.
In November 2024, at the invitation of President of the CPAFFC&CIFCA and Mayor of Jiujiang, Molchanov, Mayor of Yaroslavl led a delegation to Kunming to attend the 2024 China International Friendship Cities Conference. At the conference, Molchanov received the "Friendship City Award for Outstanding Partnership with China" and delivered a speech as a foreign award-winning representative.
In February 2025, Mr. Artem Molchanov, Mayor of Yaroslavl, Russia, sent a letter to Mayor Jiang Wending, inviting Jiujiang City to send a delegation to participate in the celebration of Yaroslavl City Day on May 31, 2025, marking the city's 1015th anniversary.
In March 2025, at the invitation of Jiujiang City, Elena Volkova, Deputy Mayor of Yaroslavl, led a delegation to Jiujiang for a four-day exchange visit. During their stay in Jiujiang, the Yaroslavl delegation engaged in in-depth exchanges with Jiujiang counterparts in the fields of education, sports, and culture.
